What is a galactogogue and how does it help my milk supply?

There are tons of different galactogogues that you can use to increase you breast milk supply. It is important to note that not everyone’s body reacts the same to different galactogogues. For that reason it is a great idea to try using lots of different ingredients that may increase your milk supply. I ALWAYS include multiple milk boosting ingredients in my lactation smoothies (don’t worry, not the garlic, that would be weird).

How to Increase Milk Supply With Lactation Smoothies

One simple way to make the sometimes long journey of breastfeeding a lot easier is by keeping your milk supply high. (I’m about to be entering my sixth year of breastfeeding soon… between my kids.) Cashews:

Healthy nuts like cashews are known to increase the quality of your breast milk. Breast milk is mainly composed of healthy fat and you need to be consuming healthy fats to increase the richness of your milk. I chose cashews for this smoothie recipe for lactating moms to increase milk supply because they are a soft nut that blends easily to create a thicker lactation smoothie texture.

Blueberries:

Breastfeeding will literally suck the liquid and nutrients right out of you! Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that are essential to a healthy breast milk supply. I’ve included blueberries in this smoothie recipe for breastfeeding moms because the extra boost of vitamins and minerals in this delicious fruit will aid in lactation as well as rehydrating you when you REALLY need it!

Flax Meal:

Spectrum Essentials Organic Ground Flaxseed, 24 Ounce Flax seeds are a well-known galactagogue. Almost every lactation recipe (cookies, smoothies, and more) will include flax meal! It contains essential fatty acids you need and definitely will boost your supply quickly.

Brewer’s Yeast:

NOW Brewer’s Yeast Debittered that I  use, 1-Pound

Brewer’s yeast helps many women increase their breast milk supply. So why not add a bit into your morning healthy smoothies for breast milk? Get the debittered, it’s tasteless.

Oats:

oatmeal for blueberry lactation smoothie for breastfeeding moms to increase breast milk supply overnight Oatmeal is high in iron. Which is a nutrient essential to maintaining a high milk supply. Adding oats into your diet daily is a well-known way to increase your milk supply. They are also amazing for keeping you full and satiated to help you continue a healthy diet to lose the baby weight quickly in a healthy way.

Superfood Protein Powder

While breastfeeding you require a lot of protein! Between around 70 grams per day. Honestly, it’s pretty tough to get in that much protein unless you are actively trying to. Protein is the building block for every cell in your and your growing baby’s body. So it is essential to get enough protein while breastfeeding. I even notice a direct effect on the amount of breastmilk I create and how much protein I’ve consumed that day. Since you need so much protein while breastfeeding, you don’t want to leave it out of an entire meal like this smoothie! Plus adding protein and healthy fats to smoothies (which typically contain a decent amount of carbs from fruits) will help you metabolize and utilize the natural sugars in the smoothie more slowly. So be sure to always add in a scoop of high quality protein powder into your lactation smoothies.

What protein powders are great for lactation smoothies?

One of my favorite choices of protein powder for lactation smoothies is So Lean and So Clean by Ora Organic. They have wonderfully clean ingredients, a refreshing taste, and were one of my favorites to use postpartum. But there are a handful of high quality protein powders that I would recommend for using while breastfeeding. Everyone has a different taste , nutritional need, and budget but I’m sure on this list you will find your perfect protein powder match!
