What is a Breastfeeding Smoothie?
A breastfeeding smoothie is a smoothie that is designed to help nursing moms increase their breastmilk supply. It can also help you to lose the baby weight because they serve as a healthy meal replacement as well. This smoothie is packed with healthy ingredients like oats, flaxseed, and coconut which are known to help give your milk supply a boost. It is also delicious and filling so you won’t be tempted to snack on unhealthy things.
Breastfeeding smoothies are also called lactation smoothies. They contain galactagogues which are foods or herbs (or sometimes both) that are known to increase lactation.
All of my breastfeeding smoothies always call for a breastfeeding-safe protein powder because getting enough protein is directly linked to breastmilk supply. And as a side thought, so is drinking enough. If you are not hydrated you cannot create a lot of breastmilk. So this and all my other lactation smoothie recipes always add a one-two-THREE punch towards increasing your milk supply.
- hydration (Check this out if you need a better idea of how to stay hydrated while breastfeeding.)
- protein (Check this out if you are wondering if it is safe to drink protein powder while breastfeeding.)
- and lactogenic foods! (Here are some more lactogenic foods you can add into your diet to increase breastmilk supply.)

Tips for Making this Breastfeeding Smoothie for Lactation
- You don’t HAVE to use frozen fruit in this smoothie, but it makes a better texture if you do. If you don’t have frozen pineapple you could use fresh or even canned and just add ice instead.
- Not everyone likes their smoothies the same texture. Just add more coconut milk if it’s too thick for you or some ice if it’s too watery.
- I personally like making this smoothie with either vanilla whey Shakeology or vanilla So Lean and So Clean. But you can also make this smoothie even MORE lactogenic by using a specific lactation protein powder like Majka or Milk Dust. However, they do both have a distinct flavor and aren’t my favorite to blend with this traditional flavor combo.
Ingredients
- 1 cup coconut milk (the kind in the milk section)
- up to 8 oz water to taste
- 2 tablespoons shredded coconut (unsweetened)
- 1 scoop So Lean and So Clean or Shakeology Vanilla
- 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
- 1 tablespoon flax meal
- 2 tablespoons quick oats
Instructions
- Add coconut milk to the blender.
- Then add in all other ingredients.
- Blend well.
- Sprinkle with coconut flakes to garnish.
