Eating and weight gain during pregnancy can be tricky. It’s a delicate dance between nourishing yourself and your baby and gaining too much weight during pregnancy.

Keep yourselves nourished by having smaller more frequent meals and snacks throughout the day. This way your hunger cravings will stay maintained and your baby gets all the nutrients they need while keeping both of you healthy.

These eight yummy and healthy foods during pregnancy will give you energy and satisfaction.

Prenatal nutrition and fitness feels like a mystery to many of us. I mean your doctor hardly even touches on that area at all.

How’s a mom to know what to eat, what not to eat, and how to safely exercise to have a fit bump-only pregnancy and grow the most healthy baby possible?

But there is this new ah-mazing 2-part prenatal nutrition and fitness course like nothing I’ve ever seen before called The Perfect Pregnancy Plan. It breaks down EVERYTHING about prenatal nutrition, has tons of amazing recipes, and even has a full 40 week workout plan.

A Healthy Trail Mix

Make this tasty snack yourself or purchase in the store.  You can find or make many combinations of trail mix by adding your favorite nutsdried fruitseeds and even chocolate chips.

This will hit the spot for something sweet and salty while boosting your protein intake.

This snack is easy to grab or keep a small bag in your purse or desk for quick munching.

The biggest thing to remember when making or choosing a trail mix, is you want more of the good stuff and less of the not so healthy stuff.

Ideally, you’ll want lots of nuts, seeds and dried fruits, and less of the candy bits or empty carb sticks.

Avocado

This little green delight is a super food!   Spoon the pulp out to slice up for a sandwich, cut up in a salad or eat alone.

The creamy buttery goodness adds fiber to your diet and promotes breast milk.  Avocados are also chock-full of vitamins.

They are also an excellent source of folate, which is an essential nutrient during pregnancy to prevent certain birth defects like Spina Bifida (a spinal cord problem.)

600mcg is typically recommended during pregnancy, and 1 cup of avocado can offer 100mcgs! Which makes it a perfect fruit to add to your daily diet.

Chickpeas

These little balls of protein are great for anyone, especially preggos. They are part of the legume family which is promoted during pregnancy for their protein and fiber.

Chickpeas are good alone, tossed into a salad for extra texture and filling, or ground into a hummus.

One of my favorite ways to eat them is to simply open up a can of organic chickpeas and bake them for 15 minutes in the over. Add a little bit of salt, and they become addicting little savory treats.

Hummus is another favorite of mine. The flavor possibilities are endless simply by adding a bit of seasoning or veggies and then spread on to crackers or pita bread. Even better, using the hummus as a dip for fresh veggie sticks!

This makes a yummy and filling snack.

Nutty-Butter

Not the yellow ones!  Check out your grocer’s shelves for the wide range of peanut butteralmond butter and even cashew butter.

This is another high protein snack that will keep you full a little longer.

Look in your area to see if any local stores offer a grinding machine where you can mix nuts to create a new flavor of this pleasing spread.

Be sure to check out the ingredients of the nut butter. Many are loaded with hidden sugars.

Pair your nutty butter with a tall cold glass of almond milk and enjoy your healthy choice.

Pasta Salad

This inexpensive carb can serve for lunch, dinner, and a side dish. Pasta is available in many sizes, whole wheat or gluten-free. You can even make simple noodles from a zucchini.

Choose some noodles, get some veggies, and mix together with a light dressing.  It’s a budget friendly food and provides a well-balanced dish.

Eggs

Start your day off right with a simple egg.

Eggs are loaded with protein and nutrients. They’re perfect in the morning to help keep your energy levels up all while keeping you full longer.

Plus they can be prepared in so many ways!

Keep it simple by scrambling or boiling, or kick it up a notch to an omelet, frittata or egg salad.  Pair your egg with some whole wheat toast to get a good mix of protein and carbs to kick start your energy.

Dairy Delights

Yogurt and cheese are sweet and savory snacks to incorporate in your diet.

The cool creaminess of yogurt or yogurt alternatives (If you avoid lactose) can satisfy your pregnancy cravings and even help with some heartburn.  There is plenty of cheese to choose from in addition to your yogurt.

Cottage cheese is another good choice especially with some fruit mixed in such as pineapple or peaches.

Plus you can make a big batch of them and keep them in your fridge and just snack throughout the day.

They are also amazing to munch on to boost your milk supply after baby comes too!
