What are Protein Powders to Increase Breast Milk Supply?

Many foods are known to increase the amount of breast milk a mother produces, known as galactogogues or lactogenic food.

For years people have been making lactation cookies to increase their milk supply postpartum. But noshing on cookies all day sure isn’t going to help you lose the baby weight fast.

So in more recent years, other lactation recipes have gained popularity such as lactation smoothies, lactation energy balls, and even overnight oats that increase breast milk supply!

Mothers have been on the hunt for foods that could increase their lactation while also helping them to shed the baby weight. As mentioned before, lactation cookies just won’t do the trick there!

So some brand new companies (all created by mothers or nurses) began creating protein powders that also contain galactogogues to increase breast milk in nursing moms!

These protein powders contain all natural and healthy ingredients, because what you eat while breastfeeding directly affects the quantity and quality of your breastmilk.

They also each contain a unique formulation of foods and or herbs well-known to increase breast milk supply in women.

Postpartum Weightloss While Breastfeeding

There is one struggle that so many moms have postpartum, knowing how to lose the baby weight safely while breastfeeding. Can you even do that? How can you diet and breastfeed? How can you lose the excess weight and not lose your milk supply?

For years I’ve been asked by my mom clients these same questions in different ways again and again. So as a certified online health coach, fitness trainer, maternal nutrition specialist, and mom of 3, I decided to compile the proven successful postpartum diet and exercise plan that I created for my breastfeeding mom clients into a program that now anyone can have access to! It’s called the Milky Mama’s Postpartum Plan and it is built for you!

My Past Experiences with Protein Powders for Nursing Moms to Increase Lactation

I’ve actually sampled some of these protein powders before.

I first tried Majka when the company first launched a couple years ago. At that time I was breastfeeding, but I was deep into my breastfeeding journey (over 2 years) and my supply was well established and my daughter wasn’t drinking it for anything more than comfort and habit at that point.

So while I was able to learn more about a wonderful new company, and make some delicious recipes like a raspberry lactation smoothie and lactation energy balls with their product, I couldn’t really attest to whether or not it increased breast milk back then.

I also tried out Milk Dust during my last pregnancy. Though it is formulated to increase breast milk in lactating women, it also has great ingredients that support a healthy pregnancy and benefit fetal growth and development.

I absolutely love protein powder (I kind of have an addiction) and write about them and try new products often. So when I had my last baby six months ago, I saw the perfect opportunity to really try out these protein powders that claim to increase your breast milk supply when mamas would need it most:

When first establishing their breast milk supply.

How Did I Test Each Protein Powder? Boobie Body, Milk Dust, and Majka?

I decided it was time that a mama (me) put these 3 lactation protein powders to the ultimate test. Taking each product individually for five days, with 3 days rest between products with no lactogenic protein powder to let my system reset.

Each protein powder was given a week to test it’s lactogenic properties on my body. Please note that while there are many foods and herbs known as galactogogues, not every one will work for every woman. Each body responds to different lactogenic foods better and my results may not be the same as yours.

However Boobie Body, Milk Dust, and Majka each include very widely known galactoguges (and more than one in each protein powder formulation) that are known to be highly effective. So there is a good chance you will see an increase in supply with one if not all.

So when putting these three brands to the ultimate lactation protein powder test I picked up a bottle of each when I was only 2 month postpartum and went on a quest to help all mamas learn the difference in taste, price, ingredients, and how effective each lactation protein powder is!

Did All 3: Majka, Milk Dust, and Boobie Body Increase My Milk?

Spoiler alert. I will go into detail comparing my results and the similarities and differences in each brand below so that you can make the best decision as to what is right for you.

But I am happy to say that I honestly did see an increase in breast milk supply when drinking Boobie Body, Milk Dust AND Majka! As their formulations in what they refer to as their “lactation blends” differ, the amount of milk and how full my breasts felt varied between brands and you can read more about that below.

I think your determining factors will ultimately be how much milk you are attempting to create (such as a surplus for freezing perhaps), your taste preference, and your price point.

These are the biggest differences between the 3 companies.

First Protein Powder for Breastfeeding: Boobie Body Superfood Shake for Busy Moms

  1. What does it cost? About $45 for 20 servings. OR you can join their club and get a 3 tub bundle for about $40 per tub.
  2. What is in their exclusive lactation blend? Organic Moringa, Organic Maca Root, Organic Shatavari, Organic Cinnamon, Organic Turmeric. This formula is completely different than Milk Dust and Majka.
  3. How does Boobie Body taste? This is where this protein powder shines! The flavors are basically what you would expect from a regular protein powder. Delicious chocolate, vanilla chai, vanilla cookie, and even coffee caramel! I’ve tried all except vanilla cookie and not was disappointed! The vanilla chai and coffee caramel are even good warm and both the chocolate and vanilla protein shakes blend well with almost any smoothie ingredient.
  4. What are the macros and calorie count? Each serving contains 19 grams of organic plant based protein, zero grams of sugar, 7 grams of carbohydrates, 2.5 grams of fat and only 120 calories.
  5. Did it increase my milk supply? Yes! I noticed with all 3 lactation protein powders, my milk supply didn’t increase until the second day. But after that I was full of milk from morning to night. Normally my supply decreases as the day progresses but with Boobie Body protein shakes my supply didn’t decrease as the day wore on.
  6. Did I have a surplus of milk? No. I didn’t feel any surge in supply or uncomfortable engorgement that would require me to pump off the excess breast milk. Instead I noticed a markedly full feeling of breast milk throughout the entire day. It was comfortable and I was confident my baby would always be satiated.
  7. Do they have other products that increase lactation? Yes. Boobie Body is only one product from Boobie Brands who originally began making small batches of Boobie Bars and also have Boobie Bark and Boobie Bears. (Hint, the code below works for all their products.)
  8. Where can you get it? Boobie Body Lactation Protein Shake is available on their website, on Amazon, and at Target.
  9. Is there a discount code? You betcha! I scored you guys codes for each product on this list! Use code VIGOR20 for 20% off at checkout

Summary of Results of one week of drinking Boobie Body.

I was surprised to find that Boobie Body did increase my milk supply because it’s formulation of galactogogues is completely different than that of Majka and Milk Dust, which are pretty similar.

Boobie Body focuses on herbs rather than foods to increase lactation and I was really pleased with the constant full feeling it gave my breasts day after day. Never uncomfortable with too much milk, but never low in supply even in the evening when my supply is usually really low.

Also Boobie Body definitely wins for flavor. The other brands only have one flavor option and it is pretty strong. With Boobie Body you can choose between chocolate, vanilla, and coffee.

Another benefit of Boobie Body is that it is all organic and free of any common allergens etc, it’s really pure.

Second Lactation Protein Powder: Majka Nourishing Lactation Protein Powder

  1. What does it cost? About $65 for 15 servings.
  2. What is in their exclusive lactation blend? Organic flax seed, organic ginger root, organic turmeric root, organic caraway seed, organic clove bud, shatavari root and organic sweet potato root.
  3. How does Majka taste? Majka recently reformulated their lactation blend so if you have tried it in the past, it might be different now. It used to taste very strong of fennel but that ingredient (fenugreek) has since been removed as it causes some moms and babies gas or stomach irritation. It still has a unique flavor of a plant based protein powder and greens a bit. I feel the flavor is very good when used in cooking like in energy bites and goes very well with chocolate because of the turmeric. But it takes a bit of getting used to as a shake. It definitely grew on me over time and my bottle is empty, but it is a strong flavor at first.
  4. What are the macros and calorie count? 1 serving has 15 grams of plant-based protein in only 125 calories, 3 grams of sugar, 8 grams of carbohydrates, and only 2 grams of fat.
  5. Did it increase my milk supply? Yes. But it wasn’t as much as the other two. I did find with taking two shakes in one day there was a notable increase in milk. Where this lactation protein powder stands out is their new formulation basically includes your prenatal vitamin as well. One less thing to worry about while you have postpartum baby brain!
  6. Did I have a surplus of milk? No surplus, but a nice increase with two doses of the shake.
  7. Do they have other products that increase lactation? Yes. Majka has the lactation bites which I mentioned previously, that is my favorite product of theirs! They also have a lactation booster drink and I believe a lactogenic oatmeal now too.
  8. Where can you get this protein powder? You can pick up Majka Nourishing Lactation Protein Powder on their website or on Amazon.
  9. Is there a discount code? For my readers? Of course! Use code VIGORITOUT20 for 20% off your first order!

Summary of Results of 1 Week of drinking Majka Nourishing Lactation Protein Powder

I did see a definite increase in milk supply. So much so that I had more than my baby could eat, felt a little engorged, and was able to pump some for later! I like having a freezer stash for if I ever want to give her a bottle or let anyone else help in the feeding on occasion.

While this protein powder for nursing moms is the highest price per serving in comparison with the other two protein powders, I attribute that to the fact that it is also has the highest nutritional content by far.

Not only does Majka contain a lactation blend specially formulated to increase breast milk supply, but it also contains a probiotic blend, an organic greens blend, an organic polyphenol blend, and lots of digestive enzymes.

You could stop taking some of your other supplements for sure while drinking this protein shake! The nutritional content is quite impressive and you can look it over yourself through the link below.

Here is my review of Majka from when I first tried it, and a delicious lactation smoothie recipe to accompany it.

Third Protein Powder for Nursing Mothers: Milk Dust

  1. What does it cost? About $50 for 22 servings.
  2. What is in their exclusive lactation blend? Milk thistle, red raspberry leaf, Brewer’s yeast, organic fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds.
  3. How does it taste? If you hate black licorice this is probably not the best choice for you. This protein powder has a very distinct unique taste of fennel and cinnamon. Which in my opinion, actually compliment each other perfectly and it tastes like a dessert! But, being such a strong unique flavor, some aren’t a fan. It tastes really similar to Majka but with a hint of cinnamon.
  4. What are the macros and calorie count? One serving of this protein powder is only 100 calories with 16 grams of plant based protein. It also contains 4 grams of sugar, 8 grams of carbohydrates, and only 1/2 gram of fat.
  5. Did it increase my milk supply? I’m pleased to say that once again, yes! Milk Dust Lactation Protein Powder did increase my milk supply. As with the others, not the first day but by the second day and throughout the rest of the week my supply was higher than usual.
  6. Did I have a surplus of milk? Yes. This powder is similar to Majka and how it works and tastes. I had excess to pump some for the freezer. So if you are building a stash this would be a great choice for you.
  7. Do they have other products that increase lactation? They just released some lactation bars! I haven’t tried them yet though.
  8. Where can you get this protein powder? This protein powder for nursing mamas is available on their website and also on Amazon!
  9. Do you have a coupon for me? Well sure! Use LACTATION at checkout for 10% off the bottle!

Summary of Results of 1 Week of drinking Milk Dust

I really liked the taste of this protein powder. If you like black licorice (any maybe even if you don’t super loooove it you still might love it blended with cinnamon bark, yum!) you’re going to love it. It really tastes like a dessert to me and it makes sense that it supposed to help curb sugar cravings.

There’s also a sample size pack available so you can give it a try before making the big purchase. (My code won’t work on the sample though… I don’t think.)

I was so pleased to have found ANOTHER lactation protein powder that indeed increased my milk supply to where I had some extra to pump to build up that freezer stash!

From eating fennel in salads and soups immediately postpartum, I already know that for me personally it very much increases my breast milk supply. So it’s not a huge surprise to me that Milk Dust worked so well.

If you’ve had success with any milk making teas for instance, there is a good chance this protein powder will work great for you too.

The Votes are In on the Ultimate Lactation Protein Powder Challenge:

The Lactation Protein Shake Comparisons

  • All three products: Majka Nourishing Lactation Protein Powder, Milk Dust, and Boobie Body Lactation Shake each did what they were supposed to do.
  • After giving them 5 days of trying 1 1/2 servings of their products per day: 1 shake for breakfast and a little half shake for a snack in the afternoon, and I saw clear results of a higher milk supply.
  • After giving 3 days break between brands of products, I saw my milk level back out to exactly where it started prior to beginning the next. So I could really see if they worked.
  • Boobie Body is the only brand with a wide variety of flavors and also has the most benign flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and cafe latte. While Majka and Milkdust each have a unique flavor all of their own.
  • Majka and Milk Dust also both blend up green! Which took me by surprise. I couldn’t taste the hidden greens at all in Milk Dust, but I noticed a bit in the Majka.
  • Majka has the highest level of added nutrients! It is also the highest in price.
  • Boobie Body and Majka both have 100% organic ingredients, knowing you’re getting the cleanest protein powder.
  • Boobie Body also has the highest list of things it doesn’t include: it’s kosher, non-gmo, vegan, hormone free, soy free, lactose free, dairy free, paleo and keto, and gluten free.
  • All 3 brands help you lose the baby weight when used as a meal or snack replacement in conjunction with a healthy diet. But only Milk Dust helps fight off those breastfeeding sugar cravings.
