What is Lactation Protein Powder?

Just in recent years, a new market has opened up in the health food world that mamas like myself have been searching for for years! Protein powders safe for breastfeeding mothers!

But the new trend had now gone even beyond just baby-safe protein shakes for while you are nursing your new little one. Now there are a few protein shakes designed specifically for breastfeeding moms to not only be safe for baby, but to increase your breast milk supply as well!

This review is about one brand that is unique in their lactogenic formulation, Boobie Body. Some other milk boosting lactation protein powders for breastfeeding moms are Milk Dust and Majka.

They are each great in their own regard and you can read all about my ultimate lactation protein shake challenge between the 3 right here! I tried each protein powder for a week early in my postpartum journey while building up my milk supply for a real judge on their effectiveness at increasing milk supply, at least in my body.

There are many known galactagogues (foods known to increase breast milk production) but everyone’s body is a bit unique in how they respond to them. What increases your milk supply best may not work well for another mama and vice versa.

All of the new lactogenic protein powders on the market include some of these galactagogues in the form of foods and herbs that are known to increase breast milk supply.

How Did Boobie Body Come to Be?

Boobie Body is a protein shake created by Boobie Brands who create foods that claim to increase breast milk supply.

This company was the first to begin mass production of lactogenic foods and snacks created specially for nursing mothers. Boobie Brands first began by creating Boobie Bars in 2011. They are similar to a protein bar with lactogenic ingredients to increase milk supply.

The company and bars were begun and designed by Nurse Wendy, who is also a certified lactation consultant. With a love of baking, Nurse Wendy began by making small batches in her kitchen as mom after mom kept asking her what they could eat to increase their breast milk supplys.

With the success of Boobie Bars, the Boobie Brand has grown to include Boobie Body Protein Shakes available in Chocolate Bliss, Vanilla Chai, Vanilla Cookie, and Coffee Caramel in addition to their Boobie Bars.

What is in Boobie Body Protein Shake that makes it Increase Milk Supply?

Booby Body uses a special lactogenic herbal blend to increase your breast milk supply. But before we delve into each of the lactogenic herbs that Booby Body contains, let’s see what the rest of the ingredients and nutrients look like.

Is this even a healthy protein shake to be drinking?

What you eat postpartum is vitally important! Not only are you creating your baby’s sole source of nutrition still even after their birth, but you are also recovering from a huge stress and change on your body: pregnancy and childbirth!

The postpartum period is critical for nutrition for mom for two main reasons:

  1. Your body is changing again. You have lost blood, probably tore, and every organ in your abdomen was displaced and needs to now find it’s way home. Your muscle mass decreased and you need to build it back up for all the strains of new motherhood and everything you will now be carrying. Repairing your body postpartum requires optimal nutrients sourced from your diet. You need to flood your body with the right foods so that it can repair and rebuild.
  2. You also need to create high quality breast milk. Your body is smart. Before your breast milk suffers, you will. If you do not meet your caloric and nutritional requirements while breastfeeding, your body will take those things from you to be sure that your baby first and foremost has the nutrition they need! You are the on who will suffer most.

Booby body promises premium ingredients, deliciousness, and freshness to it’s customers… and they don’t disappoint.

Boobie Body Lactation Shakes’ Superfood Herbal Blend to Increase Milk Supply:

  1. Moringa. Moringa leaves are known to be a natural galactogogue. The leaves from this tree that is indigenous to Africa and Asia have been used medicinally since ancient times and that includes being used to increase lactation. Moringa leaves are nutrient dense and contain iron (I’m assuming that’s where the surprisingly high iron content for this plant-based protein powder is sourced from), protein, calcium, and vitamins A, K ad E.
  2. Maca Root. It is often encouraged to consume maca root postpartum because it is a hormone balancer that may help ward off postpartum depression and maca known to increase breastmilk supply and it’s quality.
  3. Shatavari. A well known galactagogue, shatavari is an herb commonly used in China and India. It increases prolactin in the body, which in turn increases breast milk production.
  4. Cinnamon. Even just a pinch of cinnamon is thought to be good for milk supply.
  5. Turmeric. Many moms claim that turmeric increases their milk supply and it is commonly used in Eastern countrys as a galactogogue.

The Boobie Body Lactation Test

Now you know everything you could ever want about this great protein powder for breastfeeding moms, but the last question to answer is, does it work?

Does Boobie Body increase breast milk supply as it states?

So I put it to the test!

My hypothesis is that Boobie Body would not be as effective as other lactation protein powders that I’ve tried because it has a quite different lactation blend. While Majka and Milkdust are very similar this ingredient list is different. The other two main lactation protein powders use fenugreek (fennel, you know that stuff that tastes like black licorice) as it’s main milk boosting ingredient. I know fennel is highly effective at increasing milk supply for me personally. These new herbs I’ve never tried before to increase my lactation.

The test: At 2 months postpartum while I was still building up my breast milk supply I began this test. After 3 days of not having any other products claiming to increase breast milk supply, I had 1 serving of Booby Body in my breakfast smoothie every day for six days. I also would have a half scoop in the afternoons as a snack. I ate my regular diet each day which consists of a protein shake, a salad, lean protein, eggs, legumes, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

The Results!

Day 1: The first day I didn’t notice any change. I have tried many lactation boosters, lactation smoothies, etc. This has been the case with everything I’ve tried, there is no change the first day.

Day 2: It seemed that I had more milk, my breasts were fuller but my baby had also had her shots and ate less this day so it wasn’t the best gauge.

Day 3: I had lots of milk! All day long! This is not my norm. If (and that is a big if) baby sleeps well my breasts are very full in the morning. She finishes one at each meal and eats every 2 hours at least. As the day goes on they just don’t fill up fully the way they do overnight. They seem to get less and less full as the day progresses until in the evening they are pretty flat. That didn’t happen at all today. After every feeding it seemed that my breasts filled up fully again! No flat boobies in the evening this day! Baby only ate slightly less than normal today so I was surprised at the increase in milk.

Day 4: Today was the same results as day 3! I actually have a really good supply right now! There is no surplus that is uncomfortable or engorged so that I need to pump. With some galactagogues I’ve noticed a more direct surge in milk supply that causes 1 or two feedings that I’ll need to use a Haaka to express the other breast during a feeding. That can be a good thing if you need to build up a stash or go back to work etc… or it can be a nuisance if you are the only food source and don’t give anyone else a bottle to share. This feels very different. There is no surge in supply, but a constant and noticeably different full feeling of my breasts by the next feeding.

Day 5: Today’s milk supply feels the same as days 3 and 4. I am now convinced that the full but not uncomfortable levels of milk I am experiencing through the entire day and evening is from the Booby Body herbs. There is definitely a difference. I actually really like this feeling. It would give me confidence getting through a growth spurt that I would be able to satisfy my baby well.

Day 6: Once again, same results. Loving this blend of herbs!

The full feeling of extra milk even through the evening continued for a few days after stopping Booby Body, but then my milk supply went right back to where it usually sits. Plenty enough to satiate my giant fast-growing baby, but feeling like my supply decreases as the day progresses and only fully “refills” at night.

So Would I Recommend Boobie Body to Postpartum Nursing Moms?

I would highly suggest giving Boobie Body a try! I really liked the feeling it gave my milk supply. Very full and stable. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the lactogenic effects of the herbs in Booby Body. It is a great way to keep a stable milk supply along with a nutritious protein-filled diet.

The taste? I picked up the Chocolate Fantasy. Though I actually meant to order Vanilla. But late nights while soothing a baby, ordering on a cracked phone screen, somehow I clicked chocolate. I typically choose vanilla for my protein shakes not because I don’t like chocolate, but because I like creating smoothies to add extra nutrients like spirulina, chia seeds, chlorella, fruits, spinach, and more. Vanilla blends well with everything.

But the Chocolate Fantasy was delicious! Not overly sweet and mixed well with greens, spinach, bananas, nuts, blueberries, and strawberries!
