The struggle to produce enough breast milk is nowhere near new. Women have been using natural remedies to increase breast milk supply for thousands of years.

I hold a number of nutrition certifications and am a Certified Online Health Coach, so you bet nutrition is something that I focus heavily on for myself. I scrutinize ingredients of my supplements like a teacher grading a paper.

I love protein powders and have a cabinet full of them, but I know that not all are created equal.

Not hardly.

I can say with certainty, that Milk Dust protein powder makes the cut for nutrition!

Every ingredient is clean and naturally sourced. The nutrients are bioavailable as well, making their inclusion even better. Because that means you have a better chance of absorbing more of them!

The lactation blend is powerful, and some of the other ingredients in the other nutritional blends of Milk Dust (like the turmeric in the sugar cravings blend for example) are even known to increase breast milk supply as well.

So you already know that the ingredients list of Milk Dust are absolutely perfect for a breastfeeding diet. In fact the Milky Mama’s Postpartum Plan: Diet and Exercise to Bounce Back After Baby Program recommends it as one of the top protein powders to include in your diet daily to help you lose the baby weight while keeping a high breastmilk supply when following the program.

But what about Milk Dust’s other claims besides nutrition? Can it stand behind them?

Milk Dust Protein Powder for Decreasing Sugar Cravings Review

Milk Dust is the only lactation protein powder on the market that is specifically designed to help fight sugar cravings.

The only other protein powder I know that is designed to fight sugar cravings is Shakeology. And though that is a great choice to consume for postpartum nourishment and weight loss, (it’s one of my favorite protein powders that I always keep on hand) it doesn’t have the added benefit of increasing breast milk supply.

You don’t hear too often about the sugar cravings (which for some are chocolate cravings) that often accompany breastfeeding but let me assure you, they are real! There are multiple reasons that most women crave either sugar or chocolate while breastfeeding.

Most often sugar cravings during breastfeeding are caused by sleep deprivation or an imbalance of macronutrients (primarily lacking enough of the healthy fats required to produce nice rich fatty breastmilk). But occasionally postpartum sugar cravings can be caused by nutritional deficiencies as well.

Those typically include magnesium or zinc deficiencies, which Milk Dust of course includes some of both.

Personally, I found Milk Dust to be very effective at combatting sugar cravings. It is very sweet, but only contains 4 grams of sugar. While Milk Dust is sweetened with a touch of cane sugar, it also includes monk fruit and stevia as well. If you aren’t familiar with those two ingredients, they are extremely healthy sugar alternatives.

So while Milk Dust tastes like a dessert and helps fill that sugar craving, it doesn’t actually contain much sugar at all.

Milk Dust Lactation Bars help to combat sugar cravings as well. They look and taste like a dessert, but are a healthy milk-boosting alternative instead.

While Milk Dust does hold other claims in their marketing like combatting sugar cravings and aiding in postnatal weight loss (which it totally stands up to) its primary sales point is its ability to increase your breast milk supply.

I am happy to say that for myself (and literally thousands of reviewers on Amazon) Milk Dust did indeed increase breast milk supply.

The ingredients of fenugreek seeds and fennel seeds are the strongest galactagogues in their formulation and fenugreek is one of the galactagogues that most women’s milk supply responds well to.

Everyone’s body is different, and not all galactagogues work for all people. That’s why it’s important to know lots of different galactagogues and supplements and foods that increase breast milk supply. But many people respond well to those powerful milk boosters.

The Cons of Milk Dust Protein Shake

Now even wonderful products like Milk Dust have cons for some people. But it’s safe to say that Milk Dust follows through with everything it claims to do!

While fenugreek is a powerful galactagogue that many women’s bodies respond well to, it can cause an upset stomach for a number of people. This is usually accompanied by digestive disturbances and gas for either mom, baby, or both.

If you notice your baby becoming fussy or inconsolable after adding Milk Dust or any other lactation supplement containing fenugreek in it, try removing the product from your diet for a week or two to see if that eliminates the problem.

(If you are still struggling with milk supply during this time you can try adding in another lactation protein powder or some of these milk boosting supplements instead.)

As previously mentioned, what you eat does affect the composition of your breastmilk, so if your baby has a food sensitivity, what you eat and drink can trigger it.

My children have never had a problem with fenugreek or fennel, however, I did have to stop drinking a soy protein powder while nursing one of my children for this exact reason. It caused colic for months before I narrowed down what was causing it, her food sensitivity to soy.

Any other cons to Milk Dust Protein Powder for Nursing Moms?

The only other con is only a turn-off for some people. Milk Dust does contain fennel seeds. Fennel has quite a strong flavor that tastes just like black licorice.

Many people love that flavor, while others despise it.

You can taste the fennel in Milk Dust. However, it is worth noting that Milk Dust also contains cinnamon bark, which has a strong flavor as well.

The two blend beautifully together to create a unique flavor that tastes like a dessert. So even if you aren’t a black licorice fan like me, it still might be worth giving Milk Dust a try because of the flavor blend. But that’s your call.

When Should You Start Drinking Milk Dust?

Milk Dust can be used any time throughout your breastfeeding journey.

  1. When first establishing your milk supply.
  2. When baby is going through one of their many growth spurts.
  3. When baby goes through a mental leap and needs extra comfort.
  4. If your baby is teething and needs extra comfort.
  5. Any time your baby is sick and needs extra nutrition from your breast milk.
  6. If you have a dip in your supply due to not eating enough, hormonal changes, not drinking enough, etc.
  7. As part of your weight loss diet plan while breastfeeding.
  8. Regularly if you have really bad sugar or chocolate cravings while breastfeeding.
  9. Or all throughout your breastfeeding journey.

I am still breastfeeding my 2-year-old, and still love supplementing with lactation protein powders often. This far into breastfeeding and still doing it on demand, there are a lot of days I need an extra boost in supply. Breastfeeding kind of pinches when your milk is getting low and your little one still wants to suckle for comfort when learning how to navigate this big scary world.
