How to Find Fun Ways to Exercise with Kids at Home

You know you need to get moving with your kids more often than a quick walk after dinner. Maybe their sports are off-season, maybe they are too young to be ready for classes away from mom and dad, or maybe your kiddo is just a natural couch potato.

Whatever the reason, you are ready to start finding fun ways to exercise with your kids.

This can also be a great way to start your own fitness journey as well. It can be HARD to find the time to work out as a parent. Some of us have lots of kids. Some have overcrowded schedules. And some have really needy kids. Or people like myself, all of the above!

And it can be tough enough many days to find enough time to pick up the toys or make dinner, let alone fitting in a workout!

So how on earth can you start exercising at home without someone immediately whining or you turning into a jungle gym? (Ok… so really those things will still happen sometimes, but not EVERY time once you make exercising with your kids a habit.)

So what are some fun ways to exercise with kids at home?

The key to successfully exercising with kids at home is creativity and silliness. Also depending on your kiddo they may love variety when it comes to home workouts or they might love comfortability with a certain workout you found that they love. Either way, lean into their preference in order to have more successful home workouts together.

List of Fun Ways to Exercise With Kids at Home

Turn it into a game.

One great way to get your kids involved in your workout routine is to turn it into a game. For example, you can play Simon Says with your kids and make the exercises into fun commands. You can also play tag or hide-and-seek and incorporate some cardio moves into the game. Try out:

  • Tag, but every time someone gets tagged they have to do 20 jumping jacks.
  • Freeze tag, but whoever gets frozen has to hold a plank.
  • Hide-and-seek, but whoever gets found has to do mountain climbers for 30 seconds.

Make it a dance party.

If you have younger children, try putting on some upbeat music and dancing around the living room together. This is a great way to get everyone moving and burning some calories! Plus with this dance party turned HIIT routine to do with your kids, mom and dad can get in a great workout too.

Try Some Kid Friendly Workout Videos.

Another option for exercising with your kids at home is to use kid-friendly workout videos. There are many fitness channels on YouTube that offer family-friendly workouts that you can do together. Check out some of my favorite kid exercise Youtube videos and channels. These videos usually offer a mix of cardio and strength-training exercises that are perfect for getting the whole family moving.

Try a more structured program.

Finally, if you’re looking for something a little more structured, there are many at-home workout programs that you can do with your kids. My favorites are all made by Beachbody, they even have a kids section! I actually used Beachbody programs for a virtual P.E. I ran during the covid lockdown.

You used to have to buy the disks for each program but now it’s just the Beachbody app where you can stream over 1500 different workouts any time! They’re great for getting everyone in the family involved in your fitness journey! I STILL use this for homeschool PE regularly.
