What is the Ketogenic Diet?

The Ketogenic diet aka the “Keto Diet” is not nearly new but has gained traction in 2018 as a phenomenal diet for weight loss as well as for rectifying handfuls of diseases and disorders. It originally was much more restrictive and was formulated to combat seizure disorders. Now we have realized this HFLC (high fat low carb) diet can aid in weight loss as well as aiding with many more health concerns.

But be wary when first beginning the diet there’s almost a sure chance you will get what is known as the Keto Flu or carb detox. While your body switched into a state of Ketosis you will feel ill for up to a week. I’ve got the BEST tricks to kick that Keto flu to the curb fast though to make sure you start your diet with success!

What is a Keto Diet Fat Bomb?

I was already creating and consuming “fat bombs” without even realizing it. I adore creating healthy chocolate recipes that are sugar free, completely healthy, and curb all kinds of sweet and fatty cravings in a healthy way.

In fact I’m SO passionate about it I will be launching my first eBook about that exact subject this month!

So… Back to HFLC Chocolate Cheesecake Fat Bombs.

A fat bomb is a delicious and satisfying dessert that is extremely low in carbohydrates and high in only healthy fats. They typically feature coconut oil, cocoa or cacao powder, no sugar, cream cheese, and maybe peanut butter or berries.

The Keto diet is extremely restrictive and yet can be completely satisfying IF you learn the snacks to keep on hand at all times and fat bombs to keep you satisfied.

What is KETOSIS?

Ketosis is a fancy term for when your metabolism completely switches gears to burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. In a typical diet, your body is slowly converting glucose (from carbohydrates) for energy. When following the Keto Diet your body is literally breaking down the fat that you consume as well as your fat stores to use as energy. It doesn’t happen overnight. In fact it can take up to 6 weeks (tops) for your body to convert to utilizing fat for fuel effectively.

When your body is in a state of Ketosis your body will produce Ketones as a byproduct. These can be tested for in urine or simply by how your body feels once you’ve been doing the diet for a while.

I couldn’t rightfully post a Keto roundup without being sure you knew the basics of what the popular “Ketogenic Diet” actually is! Plus why it might benefit you. So please check out the post below.

If You Eat SO MUCH FAT in the Keto Diet Why are Fat Bombs Necessary?

When following a Ketogenic Diet about 70% of your calories come from fat. That sounds extrememly excessive and to be honest it kind of is. (Coming from a total herbivore who adores smoothies and soups as my favorite foods.)

But because Keto is SO LOW CARB imagine this:

not only omitting bread, pasta, and rice. But also all fruits, juice, most vegetables, anything processed at all, and ALL sugar.

You CAN eat bacon and cheese with every single meal! (Amazing.) But the list of things you can’t consume in order to achieve the state of Ketosis is large! So having absolutely indulgent, fatty, chocolate cheesecake type fat bombs on hand at all times is essential or you will feel deprived and might slip up on your diet.

Whenever you feel depleted of energy or feel hungry on the Keto Diet you need to supplement with Keto approved snacks:

These are often meat, cheese, and fat bombs.

Why Keto Fat Bombs with Cream Cheese?

When you combine unrefined coconut oil, the right kinds of chocolate, and cream cheese you can create some of the most satisfying Keto fat bombs around.

Today I’ll be sharing with you my absolute favorite Keto fat bomb that I’ve created which combines the flavors of healthy chocolate, full fat cream cheese, and blueberries to create a decadent dessert.

Chocolate Blueberry Cheesecake Fat Bombs

Ingredients:

  • 6 Tbsp. Unrefined Coconut Oil
  • 6 Tbsp. Cacao Powder (or Cocoa is fine too)
  • 4 packets Stevia Sweetener (no sugar added)
  • 10 tsp. Full Fat Cream Cheese
  • 1/2 cup Frozen Blueberries

Yield: 10 Keto fat bombs when made in an ice cube tray. Macros for each fat bomb are: 106 cal, 19g fat, 1 g pro, 3.2 carbs (because on Keto even knowing that .2 matters!)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. I’d like to preface with the fact that this recipe is completely easy, fast, and so worthwhile! Begin by combining the coconut oil, cacao powder, and stevia in either a saucepan or microwave safe container. Normally I advise heating coconut oil over the stove as to not break down any of the precious health benefits it includes. But in all honesty when creating my fat bombs I heat the ingredients in a Pyrex measuring cup in the microwave as it is much more convenient and when making something only for myself and not for the family speed is important to me.

2. Once the coconut oil has melted mix all ingredients well until no clumps remain.

3. Pour your Keto fat bomb chocolate into an ice cube tray. Fill each cube halfway. You should have about enough to fill 10 cubes.

4. Using a 1/2 teaspoon measuring spoon, scoop a small bite of cream cheese and slide it into the middle of each Keto chocolate cheesecake cube. You will need to use the spoon or your finger to fully submerge the cream cheese into the chocolate.

5. Grab some frozen blueberries and sprinkle on top of the Keto fat bomb. Just enough to cover what will be the bottom of the fat bomb once extracted from the tray. You will only be adding a single layer of blueberries.

6. Insert the ice cube tray into the freezer for at least 30 minutes (possibly more) to allow the chocolate cheesecake fat bombs to fully harden. At this point you can either pop them out and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator OR continue to store in the freezer.

**Tips and Tricks for This Recipe:**

  • You can also use Stevia in the Raw OR pure stevia for this recipe. I’ve found when using Stevia in the Raw the fat bombs break apart too easily but taste equally as delicious.
  • Cacao VS. cocoa? Both of these powdered baking chocolate derivatives are wonderful for you. Loaded with antioxidants and healthful benefits. Cacao has more as it undergoes less treatment in it’s creation. However cocoa is more affordable and I typically use it in my recipes.

  • Silicone ice cube trays work wonderfully. I usually use a silicone ice cube tray with cubes that are twice the size of a regular ice cube. If you have anything like this available I REALLY recommend using it! I LOVE the size of Keto fat bombs in this tray and they come out much more clean.

  • I’m pretty sure fresh blueberries would be equally delicious but I love the frozen for 2 reasons. 1. The fat bomb hardens almost immediately when adding frozen blueberries (and once you taste these, you’ll want them to be done as quickly as possible!) 2. Ibotta has had this amazing offer going on lately where I’m getting $2.50 cash back for buying wild frozen blueberries. How could I not?!

    1. Lela, thanks for asking! Macros for each fat bomb are: 106 cal, 19g fat, 1 g pro, 3.2 carbs (because on Keto even knowing that .2 matters!) I hope that helps you know how many of these irresistible fat boms fit into your personal Keto diet.

    1. Cheri, yes you can definitely substitute for monk fruit! I should actually start writing that tidbit in my recipes, I just started using monk fruit myself and really like it! It doesn’t have that bitter aftertaste that stevia does that takes some getting used to. Different brands of monk fruit have different amounts of sweetness depending on if they are blended with additional ingredients to change the consistency or not. I would start by adding a small amount into the chocolate blueberry fat bombs and give it a taste test before adding more. Hope you love them!

      1. I used 2 T Lakanto Monkfruit Classic. Tastes good, but next time I’ll use the powdered as it took awhile for the granular to dissovle.
        These are really good!
        Thank you
