When I Started Making Gluten Free Thanksgiving Desserts
I first realized that I couldn’t properly process gluten about a dozen years ago. For quite a few years I would “cheat” on being gluten free on the holidays but would always pay the price after a few days.
So whether you suffer from Celiacs Disease, don’t eat gluten due to the bloating and inflammation it causes, if you can’t digest it like me, or if you avoid gluten for any other reason, these recipes are for you!
As someone who has been living gluten free for many years now, I’ve had my fair share of experiences when it comes to trying to create delicious gluten-free Thanksgiving desserts. To be totally honest, there IS a learning curve!
If you are first starting out with using gluten free flours you will find that there are some that you like more than others and some that are way more dense than others.
Safe to say my first two years at least of making gluten free desserts at Thanksgiving were pretty much a flop.
Really dense, and very chalky tasting.
But despite the chance of that happening, there are plenty of reasons why you should make gluten-free desserts at Thanksgiving.
Gluten free desserts can be just as delicious and crowd-pleasing as their wheat counterparts. They’re also healthier and easier to digest. Plus, by including gluten free dishes in your Thanksgiving spread, you’re sure to please any guests who may have dietary restrictions.

Tips and Tricks to Make Better Gluten Free Desserts this Thanksgiving
If you want to ensure that your gluten-free Thanksgiving desserts turn out perfectly, here are seven tips for making better ones:
1. Blend gluten free flours. There’s a good chance your gluten free dessert recipe will turn out too dense or bland if you don’t blend different types of gluten free flours. Like rice, almond, and chickpea flour mixed for example will be a lot better than plain rice flour.
2. Make sure the recipe calls for certified gluten-free ingredients. All the recipes on this list I’ve already done the double checking for you, but if finding your own gluten free recipe online be SURE it doesn’t include wheat, barley, or rye.
3. Use extra spices and seasonings to enhance the flavor of your desserts. Gluten free baking has come a LONG way in the last decade. In fact MOST often you can’t even tell the difference between their gluten-filled counterparts. But if in doubt, don’t skimp on spices and seasonings! They can cover the bland or just kind of different tasting flour flavors.
4. Consider recipes that are naturally gluten free. If you are nervous about using gluten free flour there are lots of great desserts such as fruit pies or cobblers that are already naturally gluten free you can serve your Thanksgiving guests. I’ll have a section for those too in this post.
5. Consider making the recipe sugar free as well. Whether your guests or yourself prefer gluten free desserts due to the inflammation gluten can cause some people, trying to lessen their carbs, or any other reason there’s a good chance you’ll want to be avoiding added sugars too then. Experiment with swapping cane sugar with different healthy sweeteners like stevia, monk fruit, and xylitol if the recipe doesn’t call for it to make a healthy and tasty gluten free dessert.
