How to Set Up a Christmas Family Movie Night
Setting the scene is half the fun! Here’s what works for us:
- Create a cozy nest – Pull out big floor pillows, bean bags, and blankets. Last year we bought a knock off nugget and I swear it’s the best thing ever. They aren’t overrated AT ALL and I’ve decided that I personally love it so much if I didn’t have kids, that would probably be my living room couch just for myself. Here’s the one we have. We used to just bring all the couch cushions to the floor to make a big nest, but this is easier! Sometimes we do both because now we are a family of 5.
- Decorate with holiday flair – There’s a good chance by this time your house is already bursting with holiday decor. But sometimes it’s fun to bring some extra lights to the movie room or to decorate for the theme of the movie night. If your lights are already hung everywhere just pick up some cheap fairy lights for easy and magical ambiance.
- Dim the lights, cue the glow – Once the movie starts, turn off overhead lights and let the room bathe in soft string-light twinkle. You can put the fairy lights hanging around or place them into jars to make cute lanterns.
- Comfy dress code – Matching Christmas pajamas? Yes, please! Or at least Christmas ones.
- Snack station setup – Lay out bowls for popcorn, toppings, sweets, and drinks. My kiddos love helping set it up—it’s half the fun. This is another place that you can bring the theme of the movie in if you’re super creative.
Snack Ideas for a Christmas Movie Night with Kids

We all know snacks are the backbone of a great movie night! Here are our favorites:
- Christmas popcorn – This is a decadent sweet popcorn recipe that is super fun for movie nights! But some classic stove popped popcorn is good too. (Two of our simpler favorite ways to make that fancy is by creating healthy kettle corn by sprinkling stevia on top or making Italian popcorn with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkling of basil and parm.)
- Hot cocoa bar – Bowls of mini marshmallows, peppermint candies, whipped cream—each kiddo customizes their mug.
- Gingerbread cookies – Or some of these other delicious indulgent Christmas Cookie Recipes that are fun to make earlier in the day with the kisd.
- No Bake Christmas Cookies – Maybe you want an easier and less messy sweet treat to whip up? Try these! I loved baking in the kitchen with my kids, but after adding a third kiddo it got hard to organize and messy too!
- Easy Chocolate Bark – Make a simple hazelnut holiday bark… we make these every year and give them to neighbors. I let each kiddo design their own bark though with sprinkles and marshmallows too if they want!
- Fruit & cheese skewers – A lighter snack to balance out the sugar rush.
Set it all up on a cozy tray or mini table so it feels like our very own “theater counter.”
How to Make it Super Special
I have tried making snacks that go with the movie theme, making little movie tickets for the kids to “buy,” and so much more that has FINALLY gotten my kids into special Christmas movie nights this year (we’ve already done four!)
So I made this simple (for you) and really special (for them) printable Christmas Movie Night Pack. It has posters you can fill in about the “feature film,” printable movie tickets “(in two styles of course), a Christmas Bingo game, a Holiday Movie Night Scavenger Hunt of things to look for while watching the movie, and a Movie Night Rules Poster too!

Extra Fun Traditions to Include in Christmas Family Movie Nights
Here’s where it gets extra festive: Here are some ideas of extra ways to make this an even more special tradition than just a one-off fun night.
- 12 Days of Christmas Movies → Pick 12 movies and watch one each night leading up to Christmas.
- Friday Night Family Feature → Make every Friday in December a special movie night—complete with popcorn, cozy PJs, and holiday treats.
- Holiday story + bake → Read a chapter from the real Christmas story (or a holiday book), bake a treat together, then watch a movie. For instance: read about the nativity, bake star-shaped sugar cookies, then watch “The Star.”
- Movie Advent box → Fill a box or jar with movie titles on slips of paper and let a child pick each night—so fun and full of surprises!
- Themed Movie Night → If you already know the movie that you’ve selected well… is there a way you can think to make a themed movie night? I’ve seen it online… I know it can be done! For instance: read about the nativity, bake star-shaped sugar cookies, then watch “The Star.” Or for Home Alone have a table all laid out with loads of treats like Kevin does when he first realizes his family is gone.
These traditions have become part of our family’s holiday heart—my girls are already buzzing with excitement as December rolls around.
